Armada OS 20260907 Preview Adds Native Sleep, Keeps ABL Risk

Updated:

Armada’s preview build 20260907 ships native sleep as the default on supported devices, experimental dual-screen paths for AYN Thor and AYANEO Pocket DS, RGB and fan-curve controls in Armada Control, and faster incremental updates—according to PlayingTux’s build write-up—while Armada’s own docs still classify the project as prototype software with ABL brick risk and a Preview channel meant for bleeding-edge testers. That split matters: the changelog is real progress; the risk model did not disappear with the date stamp.

We do not publish flash/ABL recipes; use Armada’s own docs.

Conclusion

Treat 20260907 as a Preview-channel drop you evaluate against Armada’s published risk warnings—not as a “stable SteamOS for ARM” release. Install or update only if your device is on Armada’s manufacturer list and you accept ABL/OTA failure modes documented on armadaos.dev. Prefer Beta for day-to-day use once release-tested builds exist for your needs; keep Preview for readers who deliberately want mainline bleeding edge (Updating).

What Armada is (project docs)

Armada describes itself as SteamOS-like Linux for ARM handhelds: Steam, FEX, Proton, and a full Linux desktop on supported ARM64 gaming handhelds. It is built on Fedora bootc with device support derived from ROCKNIX (Armada home).

Manufacturer hubs currently listed: AYANEO, AYN, Retroid, KONKR (Supported devices).

Preview vs Beta (update channels)

Armada can update in place without reflashing or redownloading games. Official channel definitions (Updating):

ChannelOfficial guidance
BetaRecommended for normal use; builds after release testing
PreviewBleeding edge / follows main; incomplete or lightly on-device-tested changes

OTA is still being validated; a failed update may require reflashing the SD card (Updating, Armada home).

What PlayingTux attributes to preview 20260907

PlayingTux reports preview 20260907 (about three weeks after 20260817) and attributes these build-specific items to that drop (PlayingTux):

AreaReported in 20260907 coverage
Dual-screen (experimental)AYN Thor and AYANEO Pocket DS: Plasma Mobile on the bottom screen from Armada Control; Armada Store DRM-leasing melonDS / Azahar builds for the second display
SleepNative sleep default on all supported devices; SM8550 sleep improvements; volume keys no longer wake; clamshell/power/lid debounce notes as reported
Armada ControlNew RGB lighting controls (Thor, Odin 2 Portal, Odin 3, RP5, Flip 2, Nova, Pocket 6, KONKR Pocket FIT Elite listed in that article); touch/controller-friendly fan curve editor
Display / HDRExternal monitors in Game Mode; HDR for Thor; OLED brightness scaling on devices listed in that article
ControllersRear-button support for RP6, Nova, Odin 2 Portal
Updates / install internalsFaster incremental updates via Chunkah; 2 GB update reserve; ARMADA EFI partition name; ROCKNIX labels migrated
Stack bumps (numbers only via PlayingTux)Kernel 7.2.3, Mesa 26.2.2, and other component versions as listed in that article

Handheld Notes opinion: treat PlayingTux as secondary journalism for the dated changelog; treat armadaos.dev as the authority for risk, channels, and known issues.

Known issues that still apply (current docs)

Armada’s known-issues page currently lists (do not assume 20260907 erased these unless the project removes them) (Known issues):

Risks

  1. ABL / Android corruption — Booting Armada requires flashing an ABL; Armada states that can brick the device or corrupt the Android partition (Armada home).
  2. Preview channel instability — Preview follows bleeding-edge main with little on-device testing relative to Beta (Updating). Handheld Notes opinion: chasing 20260907 features on Preview is a tester trade, not a “set and forget” OS pick.
  3. Experimental OTA — In-place updates can fail; recovery may mean reflashing the SD card (Armada home, Updating).
  4. Default credentials — Image ships armada / armada; change the password if you enable SSH (Armada home).
  5. Device-specific rough edges — Ayaneo QAM mapping, Nova sleep white flash, QAM freezes under GPU load, Decky after Steam Client updates remain documented (Known issues).
  6. Experimental dual-screen — PlayingTux labels Thor / Pocket DS dual-screen as experimental in the 20260907 write-up (PlayingTux). Handheld Notes opinion: treat that path as a feature trial, not a guarantee of polished daily dual-panel use.

Bottom line

20260907 is worth attention if you already live on Armada Preview and care about native sleep defaults, dual-screen experiments, RGB/fan controls, and faster incremental updates as reported by PlayingTux. It is not a reason to ignore Armada’s prototype warning, ABL brick language, Preview vs Beta channel split, or the live known-issues list. Match the build to how much recovery work you accept—then follow only Armada’s own install and update docs linked below.
